Rumors that The Walking Dead might be shambling to the big screen have been nibbling at our brains for a while, and now a recent statement from one of the show’s stars has given some new life to the subject.

The statement comes from Chad Coleman, who plays Tyrese. In an interview with MTV Geek! he said he’d really like to see a The Walking Dead movie, which could be something any fan would say, but then:

“I really think a Walking Dead movie is going to be in the works not too far down the road.”

As MTV is quick to point out, Coleman doesn’t necessarily have insider information about plans the Walking Dead higher-ups might be making… but, then again, it sounds like he might at least know plans are being made.

And that’s all we have at this point. Executive producer Gale Anne Hurd has previously saidthat any TWD movie would take a while to put together, plus TV-to-movie adaptations don’t happen all that often (barring adaptations of long-cancelled TV shows, which are a dime a dozen). In the past decade or so there’s been Firefly/Serenity, and The X Files: I Want to Believe, and… surely there’ve been others? Right? I’m blanking. Don’t hold your breath for this any time soon, is what I’m saying.

So, lacking any other information, let’s hypothesize what a TWD movie could be like. Maybe after a few seasons of absence The Governor comes back for a big-screen showdown. “This time it’s (more) personal!” Or someone from one of the character’s pasts returns to wreak some havoc. Maybe Michonne’s dead boyfriend. Ooh, or maybe Carl has a long-lost twin brother! And he can be an evil zombie doppelgänger who infiltrates the group, except he and Beth fall in love, and then…

OK, never mind. That would be a The Walking Dead soap opera. Not that I’d object to one, AMC. Hint hint.

One of the stars from “The Walking Dead” has an interesting perspective on why viewers can’t get enough of the wildly popular AMC television megahit which has just concluded its third season.

yeun

Steven Yeun suggests the series, which is based on comic books of the same name, is tapping into a global uneasiness already out there.

The show stars Andrew Lincoln as sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes, who wakes up after being in a coma to find out the world has become dominated by zombies. Grimes sets out to find his family and any other human survivors along the way.

Yeun, who plays former pizza delivery boy Glen Rhee, joined the cast way back in the second episode of Season 1.

“I think the draw of the zombie genre to begin with was always about the survival,” Yeun said in an interview with The Canadian Press.

“It was always the idea of how do you come back from this apocalyptic situation and stay alive? I think for our show it’s kind of cool, because in the world there’s sort of this global feeling of apocalypse, regardless of whether it’s justified, or if it’s just kind of with the financial crisis or whatever it is.”

Yeun said it’s no surprise that a shaky world economy or threats of a nuclear attack by North Korea are causing the viewing public to flock to the Georgia-filmed show in droves.

“It’s cool to jump in and watch a television show and say, ‘Hey, I might be that character in real life’ and follow him or her the entire way through. It’s definitely the characters.”

He said he talks to a lot of people who say it’s not even the type of show they would normally watch, but they’re drawn in. For instance, included in the viewership is a high percentage of female viewers, which is unusual for a sci-fi television series which is anything but short on gore.

“I think it’s Norman Reedus, but he’d hate me if I said that,” Yeun laughs in reference to character Daryl Dixon, who is one of the main zombie hunters.

“He’s a good-looking man. He’s a true badass and he has a heart of gold. If you’re not dialling in to watch that, I don’t know what you’re doing.”

Reedus and actress Melissa McBride, who plays Carol, a woman who is the last surviving member of her family, are scheduled to be among the celebrity guests at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo this weekend.

The fourth season is scheduled to begin in October and the show has not been shy about killing off main characters. Last season saw the deaths of Lori Grimes, the main character’s wife, Merle Dixon, Daryl’s brother and a former lawyer named Andrea.

“You definitely don’t want to have that phone call where they tell you you’re not going to live,” said Yeun.

“I think to an extent you make peace with it and … to be a part of it in any amount is pretty great. And if you die, they’ll kill you off in the way that is most impactful.”

Yeun’s character has evolved from a cautious young man bent on survival in Season 1 to a leader who has found a love-interest named Maggie and thinks nothing of going head-to-head with a zombie.

“In regard to Glen, he always had that fighting spirit within him. It was just kind of unlocked in the last couple of seasons — one due to Maggie and the other due to the fact that he was almost eaten alive.

“It’s a transformation that has been in the works. It’s cool to play this character, because he’s someone who’s growing and evolving like a normal person would.”

Yeun hasn’t received any of his scripts for Season 4 and wouldn’t be at liberty to say anything anyway. But he figures he’s likely to become a husband after proposing to Maggie last season.

“The direction that we’re going to head, I heard, is just building the world.”

There will be a return of The Governor (David Morrisey), a sociopathic leader who killed most of his own men after a failed attack on the heroes in the Season 3 finale.

“In the comic, he was kind of evil from the beginning, but what was really great was that David Morrisey gave him his own arc within the confines of the season,” said Yeun.

“I’m excited to see what will come out of this coming year. I think it’s going to be insane the stuff that they come up with.”

A few weeks ago, we heard that  Season 4 had begun casting for a new series regular, that of former Army medic “Roy Stark.” The seemingly-original character description launched a tidal wave of speculation as to whether or not the character represented someone specific from the books, but new reports suggesting ‘The Wire’ star Lawrence Gillard Jr. for the role may turn that around.

Among the many new characters added to ‘The Walking Dead’ in season 3 finale “Welcome to the Tombs,” we’re most excited to meet the mysterious army medic “Roy Stark” we’ve been hearing about for season 4. While some had speculated that the character’s army association made him a likely counterpart for fan-favorite comic character Abraham Ford, iDigitalTimes claims that ‘The Wire’ and ‘The Waterboy’ star Lawrence Gilliard Jr. has become the frontrunner for the role.

The character is said to be plagued by his past before and after the zombie apocalypse, keeping to himself mostly, but maintaining a charming, confident and self-deprecating exterior. The original casting notice called for an actor in his 30s to 40s. So far, ‘The Walking Dead’ season 4 has bumped up actors Chad Coleman, Sonequa Martin-Green and Emily Kinney to series regular, while AMC earlier confirmed that David Morrissey’s villainous Governor would also return in season 4 as a series regular.

Now it has been confirmed that Roy Stark was a codename for Bob Stookey.

by ‘Walking Dead’ Producer Greg Nicotero.

Everyone wants to drag one leg or walk like Frankenstein. We try to dispel those characteristics. We say, “Imagine that you walked out of a bar at 2:00 in the morning.” I tell people to relax their shoulders. Zombies don’t have the muscle tone to raise their arms as often as they’d want. As soon as actors get that sloped-shoulder attitude, it changes their body language.

Eyes are critical. When someone’s looking around the room, you see their eyes landing on certain things. That shows an intelligence. Let your eyes wander instead.

I’ll tell the walker extras to keep their chins down. There’s something a little more malevolent about having a chin down with eyes forward. —As told to Brendan Greeley
